Since their foundation, Germany’s universities of applied sciences have enjoyed great success, offering people from all ages and walks of life access to an academic education. Today, universities of applied sciences present themselves as indispensible, practice-oriented educational institutions, research institutes, drivers of innovation, partners of SMEs and knowledge transfer platforms that have cemented themselves into both German economics and society as a whole. Some 40 percent of all persons involved in tertiary study in Germany do so at a university of applied sciences, where they profit from the practically oriented methods of study and application-oriented research environments. Formerly, technical colleges (now universities of applied sciences or “HAW”) were known for their focus on subject areas like mechanical engineering and the like. Since those days, the range of subjects on offer has become massively diversified. Today, universities of applied sciences focus on all kinds of fields of study, including, for example, engineering, social sciences, healthcare and health science, economics, natural sciences and the development of solutions for business and society.
We have asked professors from all across Germany to tell us what they think makes a professorship at a university of applied sciences so unique. To read the interviews and gain some interesting insights into the world of a “HAW” professor, simply click on the button below.
