Universities are generally able to provide important references and contacts. You’ll find that German cities feature plenty of family-friendly residential areas offering easy access to schools and other establishments and institutions.
What support is available when searching for accommodation?
Many German universities offer support with a new arrival’s housing search. They oftentimes collaborate with local real estate agencies or dispose over their own accommodation offers for guest academics. “Welcome Centres” and local consultation offices also provide assistance in the search for suitable accommodation.

What do the educational options for children look like?
The German educational system is unique in the many educational paths it offers. These include primary school (“Grundschule”) for Years 1-4 and further schools such as two forms of secondary school (“Hauptschule” and “Realschule”), high school (“Gymnasium”) and comprehensive school (“Gesamtschule”). Education is mandatory up to the age of 18. Most schools are well equipped and offer a solid education; there are however state-specific particularities, which should be noted.
Are there international schools?
Yes, many larger cities have international schools that offer classes in various languages and an international curriculum. These schools are particularly helpful if your children do not speak fluent German or if you would prefer for them to continue with an internationally oriented education.

Childcare is available by way of official day care centres (“Kitas”) or certified childminders, for example. Families are also entitled to state financial support. This support takes the form of a monthly child allowance and potentially a parental allowance, which serves as an income supplement during parental leave. In Germany, members of private and public health insurance companies have comprehensive access to medical care, including doctor’s visits, hospital stays and medication. Private health insurance companies generally offer additional services. Your university will be happy to provide information on the many health insurance options available and help you to choose the one most suitable to you.

Which types of insurance are mandatory and/or necessary in Germany?
The following types of insurance are important in ensuring your family is secure:
- Health insurance: Required for covering medical costs
- Nursing care insurance: Required in case of a need of care
- Pension insurance: Required for old-age provision
- Accident insurance: For potential accidents at work

What are the chances of having family members join from overseas?
Should you be planning for your family to follow you to Germany at a later date, then you will be required to first submit the appropriate applications and provide certain verifications, like sufficient income and living space. Your university will be happy to assist you in the process and help you with the visa application for your family members.
Does everyone receive a visa and/or residence permit?
As a rule, family members will receive a visa or residence permit, provided the necessary preconditions are met. These include verification of your financial viability and proof of ample living space for all family members. Your university will inform you of the steps required and support you with your application.
